DOD fights to keep rocket fuel in your water
By Dr. William Campbell Douglass on 03/17/2011

Only in Washington.

The feds say they're finally ready to take action against some of the unregulated chemicals, hormones, industrial waste products, drugs and more that turn up in the water.

And down in D.C., them's fightin' words!

The too-little-too-late plan to limit just 17 of the thousands of unregulated chemicals found in the water is supposed to start with rocket fuel.

Surely, we can all agree that rocket fuel doesn't belong in the water... right?

Wrong!

The Defense Department and aerospace industry say they know better -- and they say rocket fuel, aka perchlorate, is perfectly safe when dumped right into your water supply.

So they're not just against the EPA's proposed limit -- they're against the very idea of any limit at all.

"A national perchlorate standard is not needed and would not provide a meaningful public health benefit," said something called the Perchlorate Information Bureau, which is really just an industry PR team.

Really? Let's see one of these guys drink a glass of perchlorate at a Congressional hearing.

Here's how safe this stuff REALLY is: It's a known thyroid disruptor, which means it puts growth and development at risk.

One study found evidence of thyroid problems in infants born to mothers exposed to water with just tiny levels of perchlorate -- levels that would be perfectly acceptable under the proposed EPA standards, by the way.

If that's not enough, this stuff has also been linked to cancer.

And if this is the kind of fight we're getting into over something like rocket fuel, imagine the coming battles to regulate everything else in the water.

Every chemical has an industry behind it, and every one of those industries will fight tooth and nail for the right to keep dumping its waste into your water... while you just sit home and drink it.

William Campbell Douglass I.I., M.D. has been called "the conscience of modern medicine."
