Obama Helped Create
the Big Deficit He Inherited
President Obama likes to complain that he inherited the first-ever $1 trillion deficit from the Bush administration--though, technically, he inherited the debt, not a deficit, which is annual.
Of course, he then immediately proceeded to replicate it and then some, with a:
$1.88 trillion deficit for FY 2009, and $1.65 trillion for FY 2010.
And in February the White House projected $1.65 trillion deficit for FY 2011, and $1.1 trillion for 2012.
Obama’s protestations would be a little more credible if he had opposed the budgets and big-spending increases for the two years he was a senator--when Democrats controlled the House and Senate. But Obama voted for the budgets in 2007 and 2008, which were drafted by fellow Democrats.
And he voted for additional big-spending programs like TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program), which passed in the fall of 2008. In fact, it’s hard to find a budget deficit or a big-spending increase that Obama didn’t vote for.
Complaining about inheriting a $1 trillion deficit that he helped create is not just disingenuous, it’s downright dishonest.
