If gold is better to own than dollars, why is everyone trying to sell their gold for dollars instead of just keeping the gold?

It went down fast and as always folks got scared and started selling.Truth is silver which is still down right now would give one more bang for the buck. Metals are a volatile market and not for those who can't wait for the ups to sell. Also a lot of peeps are getting ripped off by all the gold buyers advertising on every corner lately. I do not understand the faith in the dollar over metals at all.
